  1. MAM was defined as WHZ/WLZ ≥  − 3 and <  − 2 or MUAC ≥ 11.5 cm and < 12.5 cm
  2. Children with MAM (n = 593) or SAM (n = 47) at enrolment and those without WHZ and MUAC (n = 323) measures or developed SAM (n = 2) during the study period were excluded from this analysis
  3. We excluded prevalent cases of MAM and SAM at baseline from analyses of risk factors for incident MAM
