Table 1 definition of BPD according to Jobe and Bancalari

From: The VICI-trial: high frequency oscillation versus conventional mechanical ventilation in newborns with congenital diaphragmatic hernia: an international multicentre randomized controlled trial

Gestational age

< 32 weeks

> 32 weeks

Time point assessment

36 wks PMA* or DC** to home, whichever comes first

> 28 days but < 56 days of life or discharge to home, whichever comes first

Treatment with oxygen > 21% for at least 28 days PLUS

Mild BPD

On room air at 36 wks PMA or at DC, whichever comes first

On room air at day 56 postnatal age or DC, whichever comes first

Moderate BPD

< 30% O2 at 36 wks PMA or DC, whichever comes first

< 30% O2 at 56 d of life or DC whichever comes first

Severe BPD

≥ 30% O2 and/or pos. pressure at 36 wks PMA or DC whichever comes first

≥ 30% O2 and/or pos. pressure at 56 d of life or DC whichever comes first

  1. *PMA = post-menstrual age
  2. **DC = discharge
